biosecurity
“ Proper usage of chemicals is crucial for effective biosecurity; incorrect usage can cause toxic residues, harm to non-target species, adverse effects... ”
Prevention is always better than the cure. That’s one of the key messages of a new Biosecurity Video Series that shares practical measures for managing onfarm pests and disease risk pathways. Released recently, it is narrated by Dr Helen Spafford, of the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Resources (DPIRD), and features vegetable growers David Ellement of Ellement Produce at Mandogalup, Paul Glavocich of Glavocich Produce at Wattleup and Simon Vu of KM Vegetables at Neerabup.
A collaboration between vegetablesWA, the APC, AUSVEG, vegNET, the Hort Innovation Vegetable Fund and supported by DPIRD, it’s a high-quality video series that covers six main pathways through which harmful plant pests, viruses, diseases and weeds spread onto farms. The six pathways include: Vehicles & Equipment; Staff & Farm Visitors; Packaging, Bins & Pallets; Waste & Weeds; Farm Inputs; and Wind. Released in English and Vietnamese, it shows there are several actions growers and farm managers can take to ensure they are managing risk appropriately for their farms, businesses and properties.
