The Primary Production and Processing (PPP) Standards for leafy vegetables, melons, and berries legally require you to control and manage food safety risks that arise from hazards during growing, harvesting, and post-harvest activities.

Words Dr Elizabeth Frankish, Food Minds Pty Ltd

On the 12th February 2025 you must:

  • For leafy vegetables and melons: Register your food business with Local Government.

  • For berries: Notify your food business to Local Government.

  • Implement a food safety management program that is proportionate to risk.

  • Have full traceability of your produce and risky inputs like chemicals and soil amendments.

Why are the standards needed?

  • Controlling food safety hazards at primary production is the best way to prevent foodborne illness.

  • Leafy vegetables, melons and berries have caused outbreaks in Australia and overseas.

  • Fresh produce is now more frequently the cause of outbreaks causing serious illness and death.

Preventing food safety risk protects your business.

What do you need to do?

  • Complete the Food Safety Management Statement (FSMS) supplied by your local government.

  • Have control measures in place to reduce risk from: – Irrigation water – Animals and pests – Post-harvest water – Equipment and buildings – Soil amendments – Adverse weather events – Chemicals – People

What help is available to meet the requirements?

vegetablesWA is providing:

  • Checklists to help you complete the FSMS.

  • A webinar explaining the hazards, how to effectively reduce risk and comply with the standards.

  • Informative articles in the WA Grower magazine.
