Winter arrived with the season starting a little differently across the state. Although internals were good, there was later colouring than normal in the south, and earlier colouring in northern orchards.

Words Joseph Ling, Committee Chair, WA Citrus

IN terms of crop size, early indicators pointed to lighter crops for some early-season varieties, but the overall picture may even out, especially for growers who were lighter last year and now track towards a heavier year in 2026.

In early June we marked the start of the WA citrus season at a launch event in Yagan Square in the city, celebrating our winter fruit with the community and showcasing the quality coming out of WA orchards.

As the season moves into gear, the Queensland fruit fly outbreak reported in April, and fuel price sit top of mind for many businesses across the supply chain.

At our April Committee meeting, we thanked Daniel Ying, from AgriFresh, for his service on the Committee. Daniel’s eye for detail proved invaluable, particularly for reviewing financial reports, as well as providing practical input to discussions.

Following acceptance of nominations, our Committee for 2026 is Sue Maslen (Carnarvon), Cliff Winfield (Manjimup), Andrew Pergolitti (Harvey), Michael Kay (West Gingin), Joseph Ling (outgoing Chair, Dandaragan), Damien Guthrey (incoming Chair, Bindoon) and

Shane Kay joins the Committee as an independent non-voting member.

Welcome to new Committee member Michael Kay, from Sandgroper Fruits. Michael brings his practical experience from the orchard, packshed and logistics.

It is exciting that our Committee continues to include perspectives from different regions, businesses sizes, genders, ages, and skill sets.

At least two positions will be coming to the end of their term in the next 12 months.

Nominations for the Committee will open again in April 2027. Please consider supporting your industry by nominating.

The Committee meets next in October to review the latest financial report and confirm the services required for the 2027 season (2027/28 financial year). This meeting starts the process of setting the budget and the fee-for-service rate for the year ahead.

If you have any industry priorities you’d like considered please give me or Bronwyn a call.

Please save the last week of November for our end-of-year industry event. Planning continues, including an international speaker who will share practical insights on pests in our orchards and exotic threats to WA orchards. Keep an eye on newsletters for training and other field day opportunities, especially for agtech that is in WA and being demonstrated.

Lastly, our 2026 social media campaign kicked off in May — please follow us on Instagram and Facebook at wacitrus and share our posts through your networks.

Wishing you all the best for the season.
