SGAR suspension and restrictions
The APVMA has updated the requirements for more than 100 rodenticide products that have been previously available for purchase for the control of rodent pests commercially and domestically with the following active ingredients: Broadifacoum, Bromadiolone, Difenacoum, Difenialone and Flocoumafen.
Words Joel Dinsdale, Quality Assurance Coordinator, vegetablesWA
THESE are known as second generation anticoagulant rodenticide (SGAR) products. The APVMA permits have been suspended for a year from the 24th of March 2026 meaning that the suspensions are already in place nationally.

The decision was made as these products have been found to have caused secondary kills of many of our natural predators including birds of prey.
The complete list of products impacted by the changes can be found by referring to the APVMA Gazette No. 5 — Tuesday 10 March 2026. This can be located by doing a simple Google search.
The decision was made as these products have been found to have caused secondary kills of many of our natural predators including birds of prey.
“ As a result of the suspension, the APVMA have placed several restrictions on the sale and use of those products listed in the Gazette for commercial and domestic use. ”
If you are a producer with any of these products currently on-site, you should immediately seek specialist advice. Licenced pest controllers will be able to provide alternative products and solutions to ensure that rodents do not impact upon compliance, food safety and product quality.
Breaches will incur civil penalties, so action is required where these products are in use.
