From laboratory screening in Switzerland to WA vegetable crops, the story behind a new approach to nematode control.

IN 2008 a small team of Syngenta scientists in Switzerland started work on a project. The brief was ambitious: find a single molecule that could control all plant parasitic nematodes while meeting the sustainability expectations of modern agriculture. Nematodes cause an estimated 112 to 166 billion AUD in crop damage globally each year, yet the tools available to growers had not fundamentally changed in decades. Fifteen years later, that work has materialised as TYMIRIUM® technology.

"There is no new chemistry in development for nematode control in the next 10 years," says Matthias Gaberthueel, Global Technical Manager for Seedcare. His team screened thousands of compounds before finding its answer.

"The breakthrough came when we identified an SDHI mode of action that disrupts cellular energy production in target pests, giving us both exceptional efficacy at low dose rates and an improved environmental profile."

The technology has since been through more than 8,000 trials across more than 100 crops in over 60 countries, with flexible application through seed treatment, drip irrigation or soil drench.

Western Australian vegetable growers have access to this groundbreaking technology with VANIVA® nematicide, registered in Australia to manage root knot nematodes in cucurbit and fruiting vegetable crops in both open field and protected cropping.

"In addition to an exceptional soil health profile, VANIVA® is easy to use," said Syngenta Technical Services Lead, Dr Shaun Hood.

"One simple application at transplanting protects the plants during that critical establishment phase and sets the crop up for the best possible yield."

Applied as a single soil application through the drip or trickle irrigation system, it delivers long lasting residual activity across the life of the crop, supporting stronger root systems, improved soil health and better crop vigour.

For growers on light sandy soils where root knot nematode pressure builds season on season, it is a new option for your fight against these underground pests. WAG
