FEATURE Gnangara groundwater grants
Words Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development
The State Government has increased its grants for horticulture and viticulture growers on the Gnangara groundwater system to build sustainable farming systems and protect Perth’s valuable shared groundwater resources, the environment and fresh food supplies. The closing date has been extended by a year and is now 30 June 2025.
THE $1.19 million Gnangara Horticulture Water Use Efficiency Grants program is now more accessible, with up to $100,000 to invest in irrigation systems and soil amelioration, aided by reduced co-contributions.
The grants will support growers’ investment in water use efficiency infrastructure, including system design, irrigation components, soil and crop sensor technology and permanent protected cropping facilities, like glasshouses or shade houses.
Vouchers of up to $5000 can be obtained to cover the costs of professional advice to develop efficient irrigation systems, adopt technology, soil amendments and cropping strategies, in addition to soil amelioration plans to improve soil health.
The initiative will assist growers in adjusting to a 10 per cent groundwater abstraction reduction from 2028, under the Gnangara groundwater allocation plan. The vouchers will help to lay the foundations for successful grant applications to co-invest in water infrastructure and technology that help farmers grow more productive crops that boost business profitability.
These initiatives will also support growers who rely on the Gnangara groundwater system while protecting this valuable resource for the Perth community and the environment. The State Government’s investment in horticulture production is securing WA’s fresh food future by ensuring the community has access to affordable, readily available, nutritious, locally and sustainably produced fresh food.
All primary producers in the area are encouraged to examine how the Gnangara Horticulture Water Use Efficiency Grants program can help improve their operations and build stronger, more resilient, sustainable and profitable businesses.
The scheme has three funding schemes:
1. Grants to implement water use efficiency infrastructure – up to $100,000 ($50,000 increase) – e.g. system design, irrigation components, soil and crop sensor technology and permanent protected cropping facilities, like glasshouses or shade houses.
2. Grants to implement soil amelioration — up to $100,000 ($70,000 increase) — e.g. soil amendments to enhance the physical structure and water holding capacity.
3. Vouchers to engage irrigation professionals — $5000 (no change) e.g. to audit and design efficient irrigation systems; provide advice on suitable technology, soil amendments, cropping strategies; develop soil amelioration plans; and improve soil health.
